Out with the Old: Part 3. YZF600 Streetfighter

Large gap in updates. My apologies for slacking. Although that's not to say things haven't been busy. For anyone that has followed the evolution of the YZF project we last left off with swapping the stem to install a first gen R1 frontend into a 2000 YZF600R. The bike has been back on the road for a few months now, but here is some pics I took while we finished the install.

Out with the Old, Part 2. YZF600 Streetfighter

So, what I was hoping to be a simple bearing swap to install the R1 frontend into our YZF600R, became a bit more involved. Going from the old style to the new, Yamaha made the necks around an 1 1/2" shorter in length. The only way around this little problem is a stem swap. Pressing the R1 stem out is fairly simple with a good hydraulic press.

Streetfighters Magazine to end with issue 232

Some sad news for the dedicated fans of Streetfighters Mag. Issue 232 will be the last printing of SF Mag. The slow economy has lead SF Mag to be cut form publication. 22 years of hardcore streetbikes, beautiful women, great tech and entertaining writing ends with the June issue.

Thankfully not all is lost. Although the individual title is no more, the staff will return to their roots as a supplement of their sister mag BSH.

I wish the SF crew much luck in the future and hope to be able to continue reading soon.

Saturday Night Specials: Odd ball engines, Trick Frames

Here's a few examples of some unique builds centered around not so common power plants in some nicely handcrafted frames. Hell, the whole bike is nicely handcrafted, but you get the idea.

Chopper Live 2

Normally, I take this thing for what it is. Made for TV motorcycles. A season end side show of the big names in prime time television. A ratings ploy to see off the decades long soap opera and usher in the new guys that will replace it. But I was impressed and surprised to see the finished product of what I was suspecting to be another circus act of cobbled up theme bikes. In fact, there's only 1 this time. And I normaly wouldn't give this thing a mention, but I was so surprised with the switch in thought and execution that it got me thinking. Has real motorcycling finally made it back around?

Saturday Night Specials: Tube Frame Buell Customs

Eric Buell had a real moment of genius when he conceived the idea of Buell Motorcycles some 25+ years ago. powerful V twins in a light well handling package. As exciting and innovative as the XB and 1125 series bikes are, there is still something raw and beautiful about the Tube Frame bikes that keeps my attention a little bit more. Something about a Sportster engine crammed in that pipe work. Gives it that classic race bike/muscle bike feel that you miss with an aluminum twin spare that just gets in the way of everything. Here are some interesting examples of some tube framers with a little imagination thrown at them.

Saturday Night Specials: Love, Lust, WANT!

You know when the Lotto Jackpot gets to some ridiculously large amount. That night everybody and their brother makes a run for the convince store to drop this weeks pay check on tickets in hopes that come 11pm they can wade through the 40 tickets spread across the coffee table and be holding the winning number. Well, I can't stand that idea personally, but occasionally I sit back and day dream about the idea of having that large bank account and what 1 lavish piece of sex on wheels would I spend it on if the opportunity presented itself. It was the Bimota DB7 until I stumbled upon this  extraordinary piece of of hand crafted mechanical porn. The Icon Motorcycles Sheene.

A bike designed and built in homage to the late great Barry Sheene. It features a 250+hp turbo Suzuki GSX1400 engine combined with some of the most beautiful, sot after, handcrafted crem de la crem of high end motorcycle performance kit you can assemble. The engine is built with components from Wiseco, Carillo and Garrett with F1 style fuel management and electronics from Bosch to make 250rwhp and 133lb/ft at 0.4 bar of boost! The big tube alloy frame by Spondon , GP swingarm from Fabrication Techniques, Suspension courtesy of Bitubo and the most awesome brakes and controls available from  ISR. If all that isn't enough to make you salivate, the wheels and fairings are hand laid carbon fiber. The tank is hand formed aluminum as well as the oil cooler and the exhaust is hand formed stainless. Only 52 are to be produced to commemorate Barry Sheene's 52 years of life. Priced at a modest $160,000 for a bike that exudes 80's muscle bike style with the latest race breed performance all waiting to unleash a monster amount of air cooled power at the twist of the wrist. All I can say is, I have a dollar and a dream.
